On the first of May, 1897, John J. Fox entered the undertaking business in the Bronx of New York at a time when that borough of New York was still in its swaddling clothes. Mr. Fox was one of the pioneers in his profession in that section of the city and was always considered to be the most progressive in his field, not only in New York City but in the country. Mr. Fox was one of the first in his section and throughout the east to call the automobile to his assistance and was considered a pioneer in the field of automobile hearses.
Mr. Fox started out his career at 720 Tremont Avenue where he remained until May of 1903. He then moved to a new four-story brick building. The new location occupied a site 48 feet by 80 feet and included not only undertaking rooms but also stables and a garage for his extensive automobile equipment. His facility was known as one of the best outfitted stables and garages in the city.
Mr. Fox was often described as a man of whom his profession could be proud. He was a self-made man in every sense of the word.
From that first location to today, John J. Fox & Sons has undergone numerous transformations while always keeping the ideals set in place by Mr. Fox so long ago; to provide compassion, understanding and outstanding service to our families during their time of need.
